Our sports programs for children focus on the development of healthy lifestyles, the valuse of cooperation and fair play, the involvement of parents in a positive support roles, and individual children rather than the sport. Our coaches and leaders assure that the programs are developmentally appropriate, contribute to the YMCA goals for children and families, and reflect the organization's mission that everyone, regardless of sex, race, national origin, religion, or physical ability, is welcome to participate.

 

After-School Program (November & December) at Prairie Elementary

Join the fun this school year with the YMCA’s After-School Sports Program! Designed for kids in grades 1–5, this program gives students a chance to stay active, build skills, and make friends in a supportive team environment right after school. Each month features a new sport—Volleyball in November and Basketball in December—with practices and games focused on learning fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Whether your child is trying a sport for the first time or looking to improve their game, our Y coaches create a fun, encouraging atmosphere where every player can grow.

Shift into 6th Gear (November and December)

The YMCA’s Shift into Sixth Gear program is designed especially for sixth graders to stay active, build confidence, and have fun after school! Our November session focuses on volleyball while in December we’ll concentrate on basketball—giving participants the chance to develop new skills, make friends, and stay connected in a positive, team-oriented environment. Our experienced Y coaches emphasize sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth, helping students transition smoothly into middle school life while keeping them moving and motivated. Whether your child is new to sports or ready to level up their game, Shift into Sixth Gear is the perfect place to play, learn, and grow!

Basketball League

The YMCA’s Basketball League for grades K–6 offers a balanced, community-focused season where players can develop their skills and enjoy the game. Teams practice once a week and compete in Saturday morning games, with six regular-season games followed by a tournament to wrap up the season. The league emphasizes learning the fundamentals, teamwork, and good sportsmanship in a positive, low-pressure setting. It’s a great way for kids to stay active, improve their game, and experience the fun of being part of a team.

Toros Skills Academy

12-Week Program Beginning December 2, 2025
The Toros Academy, powered by the Worthington YMCA and Worthington Community FC is a new program looking to develop the whole player, focusing on confidence, discipline, and teamwork through age-appropriate training led by experienced Toros coaches and players.
Each session focuses on building strong fundamentals, developing confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong love for the game.
 
  • Levels
    • Foundations: Best for grades K-1. Foundations introduces young players to the basics—dribbling, kicking, running, scoring and coordination. Practices build confidence and social skills through fun games and movement activities rather than formal competition.
    • Development: Best for grades 2-4. Refine fundamentals with greater emphasis on ball control and teamwork. Players practice dribbling in different directions, controlling rolling balls, shooting accurately, and understanding field positions.
    • Performance: Best for grades 5-6. Builds on core skills through faster-paced drills and small-sided games that emphasize decision-making, positioning, and communication. Players improve technical control while learning to “see the field.”
